A brand new folk opera by Mick Ryan
celebrating the extraordinary resilience of ordinary people.
The opera, commissioned by The Gate to Southwell Folk Festival in association with the National Trust, tells the stories of seven people forced by circumstance to enter the dreaded workhouse of the 19th Century but able, by courage and determination, to escape its clutches. Featuring an illustrious company comprising:
Mick Ryan, Paul Downes, Roy Clinging, Heather Bradford, Judy Dunlop, Maggie Boyle and Phoebe Kirrage with members of the Thoresby Colliery Band.
The Pauper’s Path portrays, through original song, music and dialogue a broad and balanced view of the history and issues surrounding the Union Workhouses of the Victorian era.
